| Hibernating minds are minds that have been put on hold due to the repetition of predetermined societal mishaps, such as negative human labeling and social injustices. Mind hibernation occurs in schools and affects students as well as a large percentage of the population. Students usually identified with the problem of mind hibernation are most commonly labeled as underachievers, disenfranchised, representatives of the achievement gap, special education students, and illiterate, just to name a few.
The problem of hibernating minds emerges from deficit environments enveloped within the unique perspectives of self, school, and society. In this context, these perspectives combine forces to reduce the potential of aspiring individuals and consequences occur.
There are consequences related to stigmatizing labels that pierce the spirits of individuals old and young. Internalized oppression (Tatum, 1997), low self-esteem, and deficit mindsets are contributing factors for mind hibernation for students who do not meet their full potential in life. Skewed statistics, a constant influx of fragmented research information, and deficit labels (Mehan, 1993) concerning underachieving students help to nurture the atrocity of the hibernating mind!

The global community holds young hibernating minds in their hands.
We cannot allow a percentage of humanity to depart from the reality of their full potential.
