The Verbal Connector Prompt - Phase 2

The Verbal Connector Prompt  -   connector/engagement phase

The Verbal Connector Prompt - VCP is where speaking becomes a priority. The VCP is the spoken introductory part of the lesson and oral discourse is significant in planting the seed of the lesson especially for underachieving students. The value of speech is maximized in the VCP because first students have to explore schema pertaining to the discussion topic and then verbalize what they know with the teacher’s assistance when necessary. It is important because it helps students to connect the subject matter with real life through informal verbal interaction. The VCP required for each lesson helps to ease the student into the lesson and create a level of comfort in the classroom. A successful VCP is based on first completing all the steps from 1 to 6 in the Lesson Palate and then utilizing that information to assist in the formulation of an interesting VCP. In the VCP, the teacher must relate the lesson to an anecdote, personal experience, something happening in the world, community, or a student experience. The role of the teacher in this case is to prompt and nurture the students to share their information in an open and safe environment. This procedure helps students relate personal significance to the lesson and assume immediate participation in the lesson with confidence and without apprehension.

Phase 2 helps to direct students toward positive progressive movements and connects life experiences while promoting the enhancement of literacy skills.
